The district of Tiruppur was formed by carving out parts of Coimbatore and Erode districts in February 2009 with its administrative headquarters at Tiruppur city.The district is bounded by Erode District in the north, Dindigul District in the south east, Idukki District (Kerala) in the south, Karur District in the east and Coimbatore District in the west. It is located at about 50 kilometres east of Coimbatore, 50 kilometres south of Erode and 450 kilometres southwest of Chennai.
