The district of Thiruvannamalai, located in the northern part of Tamil Nadu, is one of the most revered places in the state. The word Thiruvannamalai is derived from two terms in the Tamil language – “Thiru” used as a prefix to signify the greatness of the place and “Annamalai” meaning the Lord of mountains or an inaccessible mountain.
Thiruvannamalai District is noted for its ancient heritage sites and sacred temples. The district is bounded by Vellore district in the north, Villupuram district in the south, Kanchipuram district in the east and Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts in the west.
