Cuddalore District is one of the ancient districts of Tamil Nadu. Cuddalore District serves as the district headquarters. Cuddalore is bordered by Viluppuram District in the north, Nagapattinam District in the south, Perambalur District in the west and by the Bay of Bengal on to the east.
The town is at a distance of 22 kilometres from Pondicherry and 200 kilometres from Chennai.
The term Cuddalore means confluence in Tamil, as it is the place of confluence of three rivers – Penniyar, Gedilam and Paravanar.
