Manimuthar Dam is located in Kallidaikurichi in Ambasamudram Taluk of Tirunelveli District, at the foothills of the panoramic Podhigai Hills. The Manimuthar Dam is built on Tamirabharani River to which it is a chief tributary. The river begins from the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli District.

About Manimuthar Dam

The construction of this artificial dam was started in the year 1955 and completed in the year 1958. The dam has a storage capacity of 5.511 cubic feet and 7 chute spillways. It can hold water upto 120 feet. The Manimuthar Reservoir provides irrigation facilities to about 65 acres of the land in the adjoining areas.

The beautiful and serene Manimuthar Falls are located at a distance of 6 kilometres from Manimuthar Dam. The waterfall is created by the waters of Manimuthar River and cascades down from a height of 25 feet into a pond about 90 feet deep.

The dam is enroute the drive from Ambasamudram to Pechiparai, at a distance of 16 kilometres from Papanasam and 45 kilometres from Tirunelveli. History of the place

There are many legends stating the significance of the Papanasam or Agasthiyar Falls. The most strongly believed mythological story being that of Sage Agasthiyar who had prayed to get a glimpse of the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. Lord Shiva, pleased by his devotion, appeared with his consort Parvati at Papasanathar, which he made his abode. The falls nearby was named Agasthiyar falls.

Geographical Features

Papanasam falls can be reached either by trekking (3 kimometres) or by hiring an auto from Papanasam town. The water from the falls flow towards the Papanasam Hydro Electric Project. From here it further flows to reach the Papanasam Dam catchment area. The area is frequented by a lot of animals as the falls is very close to the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve.

Shenbaga Thoppu Meenvetti Parai Falls is found in Shenbaga Thoppu, a forest area on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. ‘Thoppu’ in Tamil means ‘groves’, and Shenbaga Thoppu is one of the most ancient natural groves of Tamilnadu. Kutladampatti Falls is situated towards the northwest direction of Madurai and is about 30kms away from Madurai. It is closely located near the vadipatti village at about a distance of 8kms.
