Nilgiris Biosphere Nature Park is located at Anaikatti, about 32 kilometres from Coimbatore city. Surrounded by forested landscapes and natural beauty, the park offers visitors a peaceful introduction to the Nilgiris ecosystem.
The Coimbatore Zoological Park Society (CZPS) established the park to conserve the rich flora and fauna of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. As a result, the park came to be known as Nilgiris Biosphere Nature Park, or NBNP in short. Through planned conservation efforts, the park actively supports biodiversity protection and environmental education.
The park began its journey in 1975 and has grown into an important conservation centre. Today, it nurtures more than 480 species across nearly 25,000 plants. Among these, 85 species occur exclusively within the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. Notably, nearly 30 percent of these endemic species face the threat of extinction in the wild, which highlights the park’s conservation significance.
Tourists visit Nilgiris Biosphere Nature Park to learn about the unique natural heritage of the Nilgiris region. The park provides valuable insights into plant diversity, ecological balance, and the importance of preserving native species. Educational displays and natural settings help visitors connect with nature in a meaningful way.
The park has earned the prestigious Gerald Durrell Memorial Award in recognition of its conservation efforts. In addition, the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow, India, and Botanical Garden Conservation International (BGCI), United Kingdom, have recognised the park for its contribution to botanical conservation.
Nilgiris Biosphere Nature Park remains open to visitors on all days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, the park stays closed on all Tuesdays. Visitors are advised to plan their visit accordingly to enjoy a smooth and informative experience.

The District Central Library is one of the oldest and most prominent public libraries in the region. Established in the year 1952 at Victoria Town Hall, the library began with the primary aim of meeting the reading and knowledge needs of the general public. Subsequently, in the mid-year of 1956, the authorities relocated the library to VOC Park to accommodate its growing collection and increasing number of readers. As the library continued to expand rapidly, it was later shifted to its present location on Cowley Brown Road in RS Puram.
Library Infrastructure and Collection
The District Central Library now occupies a spacious carpet area of approximately 21,453 square feet. It houses a wide range of books catering to readers of all ages and interests, including students, professionals, researchers, and casual readers. VOC Park and Zoo is a popular place located very close to the bus terminus of Gandhipuram, Coimbatore. Well, it is named after V O Chidambaranar or V O Chidambaram Pillai and shortly called VOC park. This park is being maintained by Coimbatore city Corporation.
According to 2013 reports, the zoo has 890 animals including 335 birds, 106 mammals, and 54 reptiles.
This zoological park has a separate play area for children, toy trains and an aquarium etc.
Lakhs of people gathered here during the Jallikattu protest and made a history in the year 2017, mainly youngsters.
This is an event that has been added on to the history of Coimbatore. If you wish to visit VOC park when you are here, you are right as it is a place that can keep you engaged big time.

TNAU Botanical Garden is located at Marudhamalai, Coimbatore and is a very old park. This garden was established in the year 1925, and it is being maintained by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).
The garden occupies a huge space of about 3000 hectares of land and has a variety of plants, trees, flowers etc to keep the visitors excited about their visit.
They are extremely eye-catching and a cool place to visit. Entry fee for adults is Rs. 20/- and for kids it is Rs.10/-. Photographs are prohibited.
