Ramanathapuram District

Ramanathapuram District

Ramanathapuram District was formed by merging parts of the Madurai and Tirunelveli districts. It functions as an important administrative district of Tamil Nadu, with Ramanathapuram town serving as its district headquarters. Geographically, the district shares its boundaries with Sivagangai District to the north, Pudukottai District to the northeast, and Virudhunagar District to the northwest. In addition, the Gulf of Mannar lies to the south, the Palk Strait borders the eastern side, and the Thoothukudi District is located to the west.

Ramanathapuram is also popularly known as Mugavai, which means “face” in Tamil. This name reflects the geographical importance of the region, as the River Vaigai completes its journey and meets the Palk Strait within the district. Moreover, the district plays a vital role in Tamil Nadu’s agricultural landscape. It is the leading producer of chili peppers in the state, contributing significantly to both local consumption and trade.
