Lord Marundeeswarar – The Divine Healer

Temple Location and Architecture
Marundeeswarar Temple is located adjacent to the scenic Thiruvanmiyur Beach, offering a tranquil spiritual experience close to the sea. The most recent renovation of the temple took place in 2008, enhancing its structural beauty while preserving its traditional essence.
Sprawling across nearly one acre, the temple complex features seven gateway towers (gopurams) and a large temple tank. Together, these elements add to the grandeur and sacred ambience of the temple.
Historical Significance of Thiruvanmiyur
According to legend, the renowned sage Valmiki received divine guidance from Sage Markandeya to search for a celestial voice, known as Asariri, if he wished to attain salvation. Following this advice, Valmiki wandered through dense forests in deep devotion.
Eventually, he heard the divine voice and began intense worship of Lord Shiva at this very spot. According to belief, Valmiki attained liberation here itself. Following Lord Shiva’s command, people named the place after Valmiki as Vanmiyur, which later evolved into Thiruvanmiyur.
Even today, the legacy of Sage Valmiki lives on, as a prominent locality in Thiruvanmiyur bears the name Valmiki Nagar, further highlighting the area’s spiritual heritage.
